Visa and Lloyds Banking Group have formed a new partnership to transition around 10 million cards from Mastercard and American Express to Visa. This move aims to boost payment security and efficiency, offering improved fraud prevention and global acceptance.
Lloyds customers will receive new Visa cards by mid-2024, ensuring a smooth transition.
Visa has secured a renewed and expanded partnership with Lloyds Banking Group, effectively transitioning approximately 10 million credit and debit cards from Mastercard and American Express to Visa. This strategic shift aims to streamline card services and enhance the customer experience across Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland.
The payments giant has invested $8 billion in technology over the past five years, ensuring that their security measures remain at the forefront of the industry. This investment underscores Visa’s commitment to maintaining negligible fraud levels on their cards, thereby offering Lloyds customers a more secure and efficient transaction process.
Marc Lien, Credit Cards Managing Director at Lloyds Banking Group, said: “Our expanded partnership with Visa brings significant benefits to our customers, offering a seamless way to make payments, in addition to a range of upcoming innovative new products and services. We look forward to sharing the detail of these with customers in the future.”
One of the primary benefits of this transition is the enhanced payment security and efficiency that Visa’s advanced technologies offer. Visa’s fraud prevention capabilities are expected to provide customers with greater protection against fraudulent activities.
Another benefit for Lloyds customers is Visa’s global acceptance, making it easier for cardholders to use their cards both domestically and internationally. Additionally, features like Visa Click to Pay will simplify online transactions by securely storing payment details for quicker checkouts. This convenience is expected to improve the user experience and make everyday transactions faster and easier.
Moreover, Lloyds and Visa have teased the launch of new, innovative products aimed at helping customers better manage their financial lives. While specific details are yet to be disclosed, these upcoming offerings are anticipated to further enhance the value proposition for Lloyds cardholders.
Mandy Lamb, Managing Director, UK & Ireland at Visa, said: “We’re excited to take our long-standing partnership with Lloyds Banking Group to the next level, building on 40 years working together, delivering solutions that customers use and love. Together we’ll be enhancing the experience for debit card users, whilst launching innovative new products and services for credit card users too.
“All Visa’s products and services are underpinned by our global commitment to be the best way to pay and be paid, supported by our market-leading £8 billion investment in technology over the past 5 years and our market-leading fraud-fighting solutions, meaning fraud levels remain negligible on cards.”
The transition will see existing Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland cardholders automatically receive new Visa cards by mid-2024, replacing their old Mastercard or American Express cards.
Lloyds Banking Group stated they are “committed to ensuring a smooth transition with minimal disruption to customers’ banking activities”. To facilitate this, the bank is providing extensive support, including detailed guides on setting up and managing the new Visa cards via their mobile app and internet banking services.
