Barclaycard enters mPOS market

Barclaycard has announced it is to enter the UK mPOS market, with a new app and card reader helping the company to carve a niche for itself in the industry.

Known as Barclays Anywhere, the technology will be launched this spring and is targeted mainly at smaller merchants or large firms with mobile sales forces, and will enable on-the-spot card payments to be accepted.

It has been developed along with vendor PayLiquid, which has provided the white label chip and PIN reader that attaches to a smartphone or tablet and syncs with a dedicated app that can process payments through either 3G or Wi-Fi.

As well as being a useful tool for customers and merchants, the app itself will also provide reporting capabilities, which can help firms to keep track of transactions, as well as providing insight into payments trends and sales performance, explained Paulette Rowe, managing director for global payment acceptance at Barclaycard.

She said that having easy access to "invaluable management information" will enable time and cost-conscious business owners to quickly learn about consumer spending behaviour.
