Leaf has announced a $20 million investment from merchant business provider Heartland Payments Solution.
The money will be used to develop technology Leaf hopes can redefine "the way brick and mortar merchants operate" by providing a unified commerce platform.
As part of the improvements, the firm is looking to improve the manufacturing capabilities of its signature purpose-built tablet - the LeafPresenter.
Aron Schwarzkopf, co-founder and chief executive officer of Leaf, said local merchants have "very different needs" and so the technology on offer has to factor this in.
He added the key to success is to give them options "to create an experience that's most valuable for them and their customer".
As part of the deal, Heartland will become a distributing partner, joining a sales force that is now in excess of 800 in the US alone, while it is also creating a number of value-added apps for the Leaf platform.
