mPowa to power Portugal Telecom’s SME mobile payments service

Portugal Telecom Group is to use the mPowa reader device and mobile app to offer mobile payment services to small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and self-employed business people in Portugal.

The white labelled service will use the mPowa point-of-sale device from Powa which enables credit and debit card payments to be made via smartphones. It consists of a card carder and a compatible mobile phone app that can process payments online or in stores. The smartphone app is compatible with Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android operating system and with Windows Phone and Blackberry devices. The in-built card reader is a Chip and PIN device which connects to the mobile device via Bluetooth connectivity.

Portugal Telecom wants to open up the world of e-commerce and online/mobile transactions to SMEs in the country with the deal. mPowa is hopeful other deals in the telco’s strongholds of Brazil and Africa, may follow.
