American Express signs deal with Riot Games to bring in-game rewards for real-world spending

14 August 2013

American Express has announced a new strategic partnership with Riot Games to target the gaming community, which will allow League of Legends players to obtain in-game rewards through everyday spend.

The American Express Serve Prepaid Account integrates a reward-based system called RP+, which gives gamers Riot Points (RP), the virtual currency used to purchase in-game items, such as extra customisation options or boosts.

League of Legends has more than 32 million active monthly players worldwide. The company is also allowing people who sign up for RP+ from American Express Serve to receive a customised League of Legends Card with their choice of four popular characters from the game.

For completing registration, gamers will get 1,000 RPs and another 1,000 when they load $20 to the account for the first time. They will also receive 10,000 RPs for using direct deposit for adding at least $20 and 1,000 for the first ten purchases with the card.

Stefan Happ, senior vice-president of US payment options at American Express, said: “Together we’ve been able to create a great co-branded product with a unique rewards program that will help League of Legends players earn Riot Points whenever they use their Card to make qualifying purchases."
