Telefónica Digital is partnering with Sybase 365 to provide mobile wallet services to customers in Europe and Latin America by Q2 2012. The virtual wallet will offer a range of services from a stored value account through to payments and peer-to-peer transfers. The Mobile Network Operator is confident the growing m-wallet space offers good growth opportunities.
The Telefónica Digital m-wallet can store prepaid, debit, credit and loyalty cards, thereby simplifying online purchases, and it is compatible with Near Field Communication technology, which makes Mobile Contactless Payments possible in the future with compatible handsets and Point of Sale terminals. Telefónica Digital has already been involved in a large MCP scheme in Sitges, Spain, last year with La Caixa bank and Visa, so it has experience of this field. It is using Giesecke and Devrient as its partner in the NFC space.
Commenting upon this latest partnership using Sybase 365’s Juniper Research award-winning m-commerce solution, Joaquín Mata, head of financial services at Telefónica Digital, said: “It is crucial we assemble around us the best possible technology partners to power our mobile financial services products. Through partnerships we can bring the best experience to our end user customers.”
All of Telefónica Digital’s financial services capabilities are being deployed in the Miami Telefonica KeyCentre, a 173,500 square foot, Category 5 rated facility. The Centre is on-net to the Telefonica International Backbone, offering immediate network connectivity from the US to Latin America and the EU and the Mobile Network Operator says that the facility has excellent resilience having already survived through two hurricanes since it was built in 2000. Business continuity and losing service should therefore not be a major concern for the new service.
According to Matthew Talbot, senior vice president of m-commerce at Sybase 365, the project is “a great example of how mobile operators, financial institutions, enterprises and merchants collaborating with innovative technology can extend mobile financial services to millions around the world.”
• In other news, the Sybase 365 m-commerce solution deployed in Telefónica Digital’s mobile wallet service described above, has won the mobile payments category of Juniper Research's Future Mobile Awards 2012.
The solution enables payments, m-wallet capabilities and loyalty/reward services and was picked by a panel of judges assembled by Juniper Research. The criteria for the Future Mobile Awards 2012 included product range and innovation, geographic market penetration, partnerships and evidence of commercial campaigns (as above), and potential for future business growth and development.
“Sybase 365’s extensive customer base, comprehensive platform and extended relationships with third-party partners make the company a key player in developing and furthering the mobile commerce ecosystem,” said David Snow, the senior analyst at Juniper Research overseeing the awards.
