AVOCENT REDUCES THE BURDEN OF SERVER ADMINISTRATION FOR BRANCH OFFICES. DSR1021 offers remote physical intervention for troubleshooting server faults

Avocent has today warned that companies in the financial sector may be wasting thousands of pounds for unnecessary call outs to address server problems in branch offices because they do not have centralised management systems in place.

The announcement comes as Avocent launches the DSR1021, a KVM over IP switch which enables administrators to physically intervene on server faults from any location. The device reduces considerably the volume of administrative call-outs and associated expenditure, in addition to reducing the time between identifying and resolving problems.

The switch has been specifically designed to provide administrators in centralised Network Operations Centres with the ability to control geographically diverse networks. The DSR1021 enables administrators to consolidate the management of remote servers and network devices to maintain the flows of sales, financial clearing transactions, customer data and other corporate functions between branches and the NOC itself.

The DSR1021 switch is controlled via Avocent's DSView software to enable administrators to centralise the management of multiple branch servers. Using the switch allows administrators to remotely power cycle servers and VT100 network devices as well as diagnose and troubleshoot problems remotely regardless of network availability through an external modem. This functionality reduces the need for site visits and can have a dramatic impact on the administrative costs of managing remote servers.

With eight user-configurable ports for serial or KVM use, the DSR1021 switch provides a truly flexible configuration based on the customer's needs. Such flexibility allows the device to be easily tailored to meet the bespoke requirements of any server environment.

"The DSR1021 allows administrators to improve the service and availability levels of branch office servers by increasing the level of control that can be exercised through centralised management," commented Avocent's UK Country Manager, Paul Smith. "The ability to remotely identify and isolate problems which can then be resolved by or flagged to the relevant parties means that the delay between the emergence and resolution of issues is significantly reduced."

The Avocent DS Series KVM over IP solutions include more than 10 appliances designed for managing rack environments where space is at a premium and 24/7 centralized server and network device control is a necessity. When connected with the Avocent DSRIQ module, each appliance significantly reduces cable clutter in the back of the rack with its efficient CAT 5 cable design.
