dLocal has secured a crucial FCA license, enabling UK merchants to tap into global opportunities with seamless cross-border payment solutions tailored for emerging markets.
dLocal, a NASDAQ-listed leader in cross-border payments, has announced a major milestone in its UK operations with the acquisition of an Authorised Payment Institution (API) license from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This regulatory achievement positions dLocal to deliver an enhanced suite of payment solutions to UK merchants, facilitating their expansion into high-growth international markets.
The license allows dLocal to provide regulated payment services to UK businesses, offering capabilities such as seamless cross-border pay-ins and payouts, advanced fraud prevention, and access to over 900 alternative payment methods (APMs). These solutions are tailored for emerging markets where international card usage accounts for just 20% of transactions.
“Securing the Authorised Payment Institution license is a pivotal step in our mission to empower UK businesses with the tools they need to succeed in high-growth regions,” said John O’Brien, Chief Revenue Officer and Managing Director UK at dLocal. “This license not only underscores our commitment to compliance but also enables us to offer UK merchants unparalleled access to emerging markets across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. With our comprehensive payment solutions, we aim to help British businesses thrive on a global scale.”
The move comes as UK businesses increasingly look beyond the European Union for growth opportunities post-Brexit. According to recent data, 68% of UK companies plan to expand into non-EU markets, with 28% of internationally trading firms expecting to derive over half of their revenues from overseas within the next 12 months—a figure that has doubled in just two years.
As part of its broader commitment to supporting UK merchants, dLocal has also joined forces with the International Chamber of Commerce UK (ICC). The company has been selected as a key partner for the ICC’s flagship Trade for Prosperity program, which aids British businesses in navigating the complexities of international trade. The program focuses on helping firms expand into emerging markets, including Commonwealth nations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
“This partnership with the ICC is a testament to dLocal’s ability to simplify the intricate world of cross-border payments,” added O’Brien. “Together, we can help UK businesses unlock new opportunities in dynamic and fast-growing economies.”
With its strong compliance record, dLocal operates under licenses in over 30 jurisdictions, including the European Union and key markets across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
