Original Benchmark for Total U.S. Stock Market Celebrates Milestone; New Index Calculator Tool Now Available
Wilshire Associates Incorporated (Wilshire®), a diversified global financial services firm, today announced the celebration of 40 years for its flagship Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index℠, or Wilshire 5000®, which is widely accepted as the definitive benchmark for the broad U.S. stock market. In conjunction, the firm also unveiled a new, web-based index calculator that provides a state-of-the-art tool to access returns and historical index levels for the suite of Wilshire indexes, including the Wilshire 5000. The new index calculator is available to the public online.
“For 40 years, Wilshire has leveraged technology and deep expertise to pioneer solutions that add value for our clients, as well as for the greater investment community,” commented Dennis Tito, founder and chief executive officer of Wilshire Associates. “The Wilshire 5000 anniversary marks an important milestone in support of our mission to provide innovative offerings that help investors make informed decisions. We’re extremely proud of our heritage and look forward to providing additional services, including relevant industry benchmarks designed to accurately gauge market performance, for many years to come.” Tito added.
Wilshire 5000 launched in 1974 with just shy of 5,000 stocks. The count, which has fluctuated over time due to mergers, acquisitions and IPOs, steadily increased to its peak of 7,562 stocks on July 31, 1998, followed by a steady decline to 3,661 on April 30, 2013. Since that time, the count has increased to its current 3,834 companies. While the number of stocks in the Wilshire 5000 has fallen more than 20 percent since inception, market value for the benchmark has increased over 4000% since its launch. Additionally, the Wilshire 5000 is up $16.6 trillion since the financial crisis low on March 9, 2009.
Wilshire indices include the Wilshire 5000 family of flagship, size and style indices designed to measure performance for the U.S. equity market; the Wilshire Real Estate family designed to measure the global real estate market; and, the recently launched Wilshire Liquid Alternative family designed to measure performance of the universe of ’40 Act mutual funds that employ an alternative strategy.
