Morningstar launched the Morningstar Rating for funds in 1985. The Morningstar Rating for funds, commonly known as the “star rating,” is a quantitative measure of a fund’s past performance—including both return and risk—as measured from one to five stars and is intended to help investors better compare a fund’s performance with that of its peers. The Morningstar Rating methodology is available here.
