One of the biggest technological revolutions impacting the Middle East is the explosive growth of smart devices, according to Dr Ismail Ali Ahmed, director of marketing and product strategies at ITS’s Global Financial Solutions division.
The effects of this revolution are being seen most obviously in the UAE, Ahmed said in a statement this week. He cited research conducted by Google, which claims that the UAE has the world’s highest smartphone penetration, standing at 73.8%.
“In fact, over the last five years, the Middle East and Africa region has experienced significant growth in the adoption of mobile technology,” Ahmed said.
The widening proliferation of smart devices in the Middle East is providing a base platform on which emerging trends like machine-to-machine communications, he explained. As more devices become connected, each connection will be made more valuable, and, over time, this could help to transform the global standard of living, he added.
“In fact, over the last five years the Middle East and African (MEA) region has experiences significant growth in the adoption of mobile technology,” Ahmed said.
‘With the proliferation of connected devices and people, we are witnessing the next wave of innovation and productivity growth, fuelled by the internet and centered on the use of video, social networking and networked technologies. These have the potential to transform the global standard of living much faster than we had initially anticipated.”
Ahmed also commented on other trends that he believes have been re-shaping the IT landscape. He said that cloud computing, BYOD and big data, in particular, were doing much to shake up the region’s outlook on technology.
“2013 saw a huge growth in the market for cloud-based solutions both globally and in the Middle East. These investments were primarily driven by the desire of businesses to introduce greater flexibility into their operations, improve efficiency of their IT resources, and reduce operating expenditures across the board,” he said.
“As for BYOD platforms, they are now able to bring together security, networking, and collaboration tools in a single unified system. First-movers in BYOD adoption have now proven the incredible value of these solutions with a host of successful case studies now seen in the region.”
