February 4th 2016 could well be a red-letter day for UK and Ireland based credit unions who are working to eradicate financial exclusion within their communities. For the credit union, Engage Classic Account has been shortlisted in two major categories at this year’s Card & Payment Awards, the premier banking industry event held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, on London’s Park Lane.
Currently in its 11th year, the Card & Payment awards recognise high level industry achievements along with excellence in product delivery and customer services by organisations in Europe.
An independent panel of distinguished banking and payments experts has recognised the work of Engage and the credit unions in providing an innovative card and personal account service that is available to everyone regardless of their status or financial history. The Engage Classic Account, which is currently available through 120 credit unions, faces tough competition within its entry category from a number of major brands including TSB and Nationwide Building Society.
“It is testament to the work of the Engage team and our credit union partners that the industry acknowledges our efforts to bring mainstream account services to the un-banked” says Geoff Leech, Managing Director of Engage.
“But the work goes beyond eradicating financial inclusion as together with our credit union partners, we are attracting the attention of many thousands of people who are questioning the practices of big financial organisations and consequently looking for alternative banking services”. He continues, “Credit unions are best placed to be the alternative as for over 150 years they have provided an ethical savings and loans service for the benefit of their members and the wider communities and now, with Engage they can deliver the innovative personal account products, services and the support required and become a genuine alternative to high street banks”.
The Engage Classic Account and Visa debit card is part of a wider programme of exclusive credit union products and services developed and managed by the Contis Group, an international market leader in alternative banking and payments.
Following the event, award winners will be formally announced on the Card & Payments Awards website on February 5th 2016.
The Engage Credit Union Support Programme: There are currently 123 credit unions providing members with an Engage Classic Account.
From January 2016, in addition to the Engage Classic Account, credit union partners will also provide their members with three new Engage account services including a full current account facility; a business account -to benefit small businesses and community enterprises, and the Engage SmartCash account - a new Junior account designed to help credit unions teach junior members the importance of careful money management.
