Citi has announced it has launched a new mobile banking application that allows customers to check their account balance and any recent transactions without logging into their account.
The CitiMobileSnapShot app is being launched on a test basis in California today (3 February).
Customers taking advantage of the tool will be able to see the last 15 transactions that have taken place and an up-to-date balance.
Melissa Stevens, head of internet and mobile banking at Citi, said: "We feel this is a great way to bring information to your fingertips. It's a secure way because you’re not going to be able to transact."
Concerns have been raised about potential security issues around accessing account details without logging in.
However, Citigroup says it has taken a range of steps to boost security, including checks on the time elapsed since full login and ensuring the smartphone being used is the one the user enrolled on.
It has also ensured that no personal information that could identify the user is displayed.
