Square, the technology firm that can facilitate card payments via your mobile phone and with iZettle, Intuit and others is seeks to win a large share of the small business market by undercutting Visa and MasterCard, has demonstrated its ambition by poaching Alex Petrov from PayPal as its new head of retail partnerships.
Petrov is charged with driving strategic business development and customer acquisition in his new role. He joins Square from PayPal, which has its own rival PayPal Here product and will particularly focus on the growing tablet - non-smartphone - point-of-sale (PoS) terminal segment. This in-store sector represents a new growth area for the firm.
Previously in charge of merchant marketing at PayPal, Petrov is also an ex-vice president of consumer brands at the Safeway supermarket chain.
