Majority of Enterprises Polled are Using APIs to Expose On-premise Apps to Third Parties
Axway (NYSE Euronext: AXW.PA), a leader in governing the flow of data, announced today findings of its recent Application Programming Interface (API) adoption poll. The poll was conducted by API and identity management leader Vordel, acquired by Axway, during the webinar entitled “APIs - A Key Part of Your Enterprise Engagement Strategy” with guest speaker Jeffrey Hammond from Forrester Research, Inc.
The findings revealed:
- Half of the global enterprises polled are using or planning to deploy enterprise APIs, 40 percent of respondents using a mixture of open and enterprise APIs, and 3 percent using Open APIs.
- Additionally 30 percent of respondents are using APIs to expose on-premise apps to third parties with 29 percent of enterprises using APIs to build new mobile applications and 22 percent leveraging APIs to connect internal applications to cloud services.
These results are significant as today, businesses and consumers around the world are being wired together via APIs. According to Forrester Research, “Mobile and social commerce opportunities are the likely first ways in which these APIs will be leveraged, but touch points such as marketplace integration, embedded commerce ads, in-store digital signage, mobile point of sale (mPOS), and call center applications, among others, will soon be common ways that businesses use these APIs.”1
“Our research shows that enterprises are increasingly leveraging APIs,” said Hugh Carroll, vice president, marketing at Axway. “It was noteworthy that half of the respondents polled were deploying or planning to use enterprise APIs with 40 percent of respondents using a combination of open and enterprise APIs. Additionally, as 30 percent of respondents were using APIs to expose on premise apps to third parties, the results indicate that enterprises are primarily leveraging enterprise APIs, to rapidly develop and deliver new customer services to drive revenue growth into their cloud and mobile channels.”
On May 18, 2013, Axway, hosted a webinar discussion featuring Forrester Vice President and principal analyst Jeffrey Hammond, focusing on how enterprises are turning APIs into corporate platforms, and why API management is a crucial part of making this move successful. During the webinar, 130 globally based enterprise architects, IT managers and application developers were polled with several questions regarding API usage and adoption.
