G&D enables BankDhofar to issue payment cards instantly in-branch

BankDhofar in the Sultanate of Oman has chosen the Giesecke and Devrient (G&D) instant issuance card solution to enable it to give customers their payment cards instantly in the branch.

Customers at BankDhofar can collect their debit cards instantly at the time of account opening itself, thanks to the new G&D solution, and start using them immediately, as well as take advantage of personalisation technology to specify certain photos or other security information on the card. Metro Bank in the UK offers a similar type of walk-in service, although of course any such system relies on a clear credit check first and no alerts being raised.

The Oman-based bank will use G&D’s Convego System Instant Issuance software, but customers may still have to bring suitable identification into the branch during set-up, or enter identifying data online before going to the branch.

The solution comprises of a backend server component that is installed in BankDhofar’s central data processing centre and a client component that is installed in existing branch systems. Both components are tailored to BankDhofar’s specific requirements.

G&D is also providing the middle-eastern bank with predesigned EMV cards that can be personalised in-house and issued directly to the customer with their own photos or other data. Individually encrypted customer details are sent from the data processing centre directly to the chip in the debit card, producing personalised cards that have all the required security features.

“Customers having to come back to the branch for a second time to collect their debit cards will become a thing of the past, however, and by providing technologically driven value-added services we can increase the overall efficiency in our branches,” said Abdul Hakeem Al Ojaili, general manager of corporate services at BankDhofar.

G&D is also providing support services for the improved card offering at the bank. This includes supporting BankDhofar in creating card profiles and processing customer details, as well as the personalisation process itself. “We have enjoyed a close working relationship with BankDhofar for many years now and understand their requirements … so are best placed to offer the bank an all-in-one system that is tailored to their specific needs,” explained Axel Deininger, group senior vice president at G&D, when discussing why the vendor won the contract.
