Total System Services (Tsys), a majority US-based payments processor that is looking toexpand its international business, has gained certification as a service bureau for the LINK cash machine network in the UK. The group will begin processing automated teller machine (ATM) transactions through the LINK network for its first client this year and will have the ability to process LINK transactions on behalf of any LINK member.
The deal follows on from Tsys earlier acquisition of prepaid card specialist NetSpend for $1.4bn and is part of Tsys’ expansion plans.
LINK is the UK’s ATM network with more than 35 member institutions, including nearly all of the country’s banks and building societies, and many of Tsys clients. The network connects virtually every ATM in the UK, and its infrastructure is operated by VocaLink.
“Providing Tsys with access to the LINK ATM scheme allows their card issuing clients to process ATM transactions through more than 65,000 UK cash machines connected to the LINK network,” said John Howells, chief executive officer (CEO), LINK. “Cardholders of Tsys’ clients will also now be able to take advantage of the additional services available through LINK, such as mobile phone top-up and direct charity donations.”
