The Zapp UK mobile m-commerce, loyalty, payment, online and in-store offering that VocaLink unveiled last month for a planned 2014 start date, has announced its senior management team and it includes Ian Sayers as chief technology officer (CTO). The ex-head of technology development at Barclays, responsible for the bank’s Pingit and subsequent Buyit peer-to-peer (P2P) m-payment tools for consumers and businesses, will join in October 2013.
Ian Sayers worked at Barclays Bank for the last 12 years, rising to head up its technology development and it is this experience - combined with his work on Pingit and Buyit - that caused Zapp to appoint him. The technology stack for the new launch due in 2014 is being provided by Oracle, who Sayers will co-operate with to ensure smooth operational running of the supporting IT infrastructure.
The primary task for Sayers in his new job at Zapp will be to drive the continued development of the Zapp payment technology into the m-commerce arena, including integrating it with banks and retailers, to ensure that Zapp is reliable, secure and delivers a good customer experience. The shared UK-wide mobile m-payments service accessible by all the major UK retail banks will also be launching into this space in 2014, further adding to the rapidly expanding mobile financial services (MFS) sector on the UK.
The other senior managers taking Zapp to market in 2014 include David Yates, of course as he is the chairman of Zapp and the parent VocaLink organisation, while Peter Keenan will be the chief executive officer (CEO).
The former managing director of the Currys and Dixons online and shop businesses in the UK and Ireland has considerable retail experience and Keenan is also an ex-head of the global propositions function at HSBC. He is joined by Sayers as CTO and Justin Basini, completing the team as chief marketing and product officer. Basini used to be head of marketing at the Capital One card payments business and has experience in product design, marketing, brand development and in building new disruptive businesses.
Commenting on the appointment of the senior management team, David Yates, chairman of Zapp, said: “I am delighted to be able to announce the leadership of Peter, Justin and Ian. Peter combines a 15 year retail career with first hand retail banking experience which I believe will be very potent in the success of Zapp. Justin brings deep marketing and product knowledge and recent experience of start-ups. Ian has a wealth of experience of challenging the status quo, building new mobile and web technologies and delivering bank scale implementations. The opportunity to create a new payments eco-system comes along once in a generation. The team we have assembled has all the right experience and expertise to win in the market and deliver Zapp to millions of UK consumers, the financial institutions they trust and the retailers they spend money with.”
