Leading alternative investment consultancy appoints private client tax expert from HMRC

London - 23 October 2012

HedgeStart, the London-based alternative investment consulting firm, has strengthened its Private Client Tax Practice with the appointment of a former senior HM Revenue & Customs Adviser.

Laurence Parry, who joins as a Partner, was previously a specialist Anti-Avoidance Adviser with HMRC for three years and the single point of contact for all personal tax issues within the Anti-Avoidance Group. There he advised on major policy issues as well providing technical support on complex individual cases.

At HedgeStart Laurence will lead the Private Client Tax Practice, advising owner-managed businesses and private clients on bespoke, long-term tax solutions and leading the service delivery on all aspects of personal tax, including compliance and routine planning.

“Everyone feels that they pay too much tax, but with increasing pressure from the authorities, greater emphasis now needs to be placed on the robustness of any tax strategy,” says Parry. “Although my focus is on delivering tax solutions, I believe passionately that clients must understand the full implications of the tax decisions they make.”

Prior to his time at HMRC, Laurence was Tax Partner for ten years at a mid-sized practice in the North West, dealing with high net worth individuals and owner-managed businesses. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor with Ernst & Young and spent his early career with KPMG. Laurence is an accredited mediator with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution and can assist all clients in commercial or tax negotiations.

“Laurence has a wealth of current knowledge concerning HMRC practice and policy, helping clients to anticipate the type of questions the HMRC will be asking, not just now but also in four or five years' time. This very much fits with our ethos of serving clients’ interests in the long-term,” says Head of Tax Rob Edwards.

Matthew Wilson, Managing Partner: “Tax has never been more in the news, with Danny Alexander announcing last month that the ‘Affluent’ team of tax inspectors will be further strengthened and the wealth level at which HMRC will focus its attention will be lowered. Laurence can advise our clients over that delicate balance between paying too much tax, and entering into those schemes and structures that are more likely to be challenged or even litigated against.”
