The improvement in overall Chinese business conditions slowed in May as the growth in new orders and financial positions dipped, although a price squeeze moderated from April, leaving a still decidedly mixed result for the MNI China Business Sentiment Indicator.
The overall current business conditions index fell to 54.40 from 56.04 in April and 54.81 in March. It was at 61.22 a year ago. The result was up from 52.99 in the flash indicator survey a week ago.
The new orders index fell to 56.44 from 64.96 in April, which was the highest level for a year.
An index figure above 50 indicates that business activity is growing or improving, a figure below 50 that it is shrinking or deteriorating. The further the figure above or below 50, the faster the growth/improvement or contraction/deterioration in activity.
