Equinix buys ancotel and gains Frankfurt data centre and extra capacity

17 May 2012

Equinix, a provider of co-location and data centre services to financial market participants, is to buy ancotel, a German-based rival and connectivity provider, gaining its Kleyer90 facility that serves the Frankfurt markets.

With the acquisition of ancotel, which is expected to complete in Q3 2012, Equinix gains one data centre in Frankfurt with 2,100 square meters of capacity and increases its European network density by adding more than 400 network customers, which includes 200 new networks and 6,000 cross connections.

The acquisition will create a network-dense co-location and connectivity ‘campus’ in the busy Frankfurt data hub, says Equinix. The enhanced facilities and connections will mean a broad mix of networks from Western and Eastern Europe can meet in the German city, once ancotel is fully integrated into the vendor’s infrastructure.

ancotel’s other assets include edge nodes in Hong Kong, London and Miami, giving Equinix additional points of presence in these markets, as well as the core German one. All of ancotel’s existing customers will join Platform Equinix and the vendor’s trading community of more than 4,000 customers.

“The acquisition of ancotel significantly strengthens Equinix’s value proposition and capabilities both in Europe and globally,” said Eric Schwartz, president of Equinix in Europe, the Middle-East and Africa (EMEA). “Both companies enjoy strong reputations in the market and serve the world’s leading companies. The agreement will also grow the total number of network customers available at Equinix from 700 to 900.”
