Spain’s La Caixa bank has partnered with Samsung Electronics to launch a new banking application that will allow its customers to view their account using a remote control. The app can be used with Samsung televisions, blu-ray players and home cinema units connected to the Internet, collectively known as Smart TV devices.
Retail bank customers of La Caixa in Spain can use the service to access their accounts, check balances and view recent transactions, using the bank’s existing Línea Abierta online banking platform. This service can already be viewed via home computers, mobile phones and tablets – the latest app developed in conjunction with Samsung merely adds another channel to the service so that if you’re watching TV while your iPhone or iPad is out of reach you still don’t need to move from the sofa to check your finances.
La Caixa says that the new smart TV app, “operates with all the security guarantees of Línea Abierta”, so online registrations and passwords still apply.
The launch consolidates La Caixa’s position as one of the leading players in the fiercely competitive and innovative Spanish mobile banking sector, building on its Mobile Contactless Payment schemes in Sitges and Ibiza in Spain, its contactless ATMs, and its 2.2 million customer base for mobile financial services. There are now more than 50 applications freely available for download on the bank’s CaixaMóvil app store to compete with BBVA and other Spanish offerings in the retail banking market.
