According to Gartner, the adoption of the new technology will be one of a number of IT trends expected to be more common place within businesses, especially as information is increasingly the âoil of the 21st centuryâ.
A rise in social networking, context aware computing and pattern-based IT strategies will also become increasingly commonplace during the next decade.
Peter Sondergaard, senior vice-president at Gartner and global head of Research, made the comments during the firmâs Symposium/ITxpo in Sydney.
Mr Sondergaard said: âFor the chief information officer, it will require a shift from multisourcing to microsourcing, which is quite a different skill.
âCloud computing will transform the IT industry as it will alter the financial model upon which investors look at technology providers, and it will change vertical industries.â
Recent research from Gartner predicted that the greater availability of social networking alongside changing attitudes to business will see up to a fifth of staff using social networking hubs as their main method of communication while doing business by 2014.
