New Currency is a Success

5 October 2009

A brand new currency launched in Stroud has had a successful start according to members of the Stroud Pound Co-op Ltd, the not-for-profit enterprise that runs and administers the scheme. Bernard Jarman, Director of the Stroud Pound Co-op Ltd, said "The public response to the introduction of Stroud Pound has been very positive. It is of course early days but those consumers who have come to sign up have been very enthusiastic."

The Stroud Pound was launched on 12th September and is the third complementary currency scheme introduced in the UK in recent years (behind Tontes, Devon and Lewes, East Sussex).

The number of Stroud Pounds in circulation has continued to grow: within a fortnight of the launch, over 2,500 Stroud Pounds were in circulation.

The notes were designed by local architect Ronan Schoemaker and produced by payment specialists Checkprint, a member of the TALL Group of Companies.

Laurie Lee, author of Cider with Rosie, who was born in Stroud, appears on the £10, whilst other notes feature the Adonis Blue butterfly, the lawnmower, invented in Stroud, the green felt cloth that is still made in the town and Thomas the Tank Engine.

Commenting on the notes Steve Charlwood of the Stroud Pound Co-operative said, “Ronan and Checkprint have done a fantastic job in helping us achieve our objectives for the Stroud Pound, in producing robust, high-quality designs with both tremendous visual appeal and the appropriate security features. The response to the designs has been unanimously positive, and Checkprint definitely deserves credit for making the launch such a success”

Commenting on the launch of the currency, Checkprint commercial director, Lee Howitt said, “"As a company we are committed to providing the highest standards of securely printed documents. I am pleased to hear that the Stroud Pound Co-op is so happy with the currency.”
