Ugandan Processor Bankom Banks on Postilion

2 September 2008

Postilion, a leading provider of software solutions for self-service banking and payments and a division of S1 Corporation, today announced that Bankom, a transaction processor in Uganda, has gone live with Postilion, switching and processing transactions between and on behalf of four financial institutions. Bankom, established in 2004, has the support of the local bankers' association and is exclusively licensed by the central bank.

As part of its business strategy to grow Uganda's payments industry, Bankom provides a number of services to financial institutions in the region. These include:

- the facilitation of shared use of ATM resources
- provision of hosted services for companies who wish not to incur this expense
- outsourced management and maintenance of ATMs entirely owned by individual financial institutions
- ATM leasing facilities, including outsourcing services
- card management services, including card production and PIN mailer functions
- e-payment solutions, such as bill payments and POS driving
- the management of SmartPointTM ATMs, an independent network of ATMs in Uganda.

The Postilion solution for ATM Owners is being used to drive the SmartPoint ATM network that is being rolled out across the country by Bankom to complement the ATM networks of their existing banking partners.

"Bankom's migration to the Postilion platform has enabled more operational flexibility through user-friendly monitoring and technical tools. Postilion offers real-time connections, enabling quicker transaction times, and faster troubleshooting. It also enables innovation through the ability to apply more e-payment channels such as bill payment, mobile banking services, and mobile phone account top-ups," says Bernard Mogaka, Sales & Marketing Manager, Bankom.

"We are delighted that Bankom has chosen Postilion to support its business vision for the development of electronic payments in Uganda. Bankom offers banks economies of scale through shared use of resources. This eliminates the need to invest further in infrastructure and eases the workload and expenditure on human resources. Bankom has a seasoned and dedicated technical team in place to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Postilion platform," comments Steve Enderby, CEO of EFTCorp, the Postilion reseller that sold the solution to Bankom.

"Bankom has positioned itself not just as a processor, but as a complete services provider in Uganda's financial services sector. It offers a number of tailor-made outsourcing and e-payment solutions which meet the growing needs of financial institutions and their customers. Through its deployment of Postilion, Bankom has brought innovation and improvements to the country's financial sector. Not only has this processor reduced overall transaction costs, the company now has a platform that will help it fulfill its mission to bank the unbanked and transform Uganda into a cashless society," adds Deon van Biljon, SVP and GM, Postilion Africa.
