Mr Purzycki will oversee a business that is the fast growing of its kind in the US, with card loans up 85 per cent to $3.97 billion during 2006, according to figures from the Nilson Report of Oxnard, California.
The performance meant the unit was the 13th largest credit card operation in the market last year.
As chief operating officer, Mr Purzycki will report to Lloyd M. Wirshba and will assume responsibility for all operational aspects of the business, including customer support, collections and technology.
Mr Purzycki told Bloomberg: "We have carved out a niche market with our partners, using our computer technology that allows us to support custom card programs.
"Our pipeline is robust, and we'll be announcing at least four more partnership deals in the next couple of months.''
Prior to joining Barclays in 2005, Mr Purzycki had worked a number of credit card issuers and banks including MBNA, JP Morgan and First USA.
