May 2005 -- Kofax, the worldâs largest information capture vendor, today announced a new version of Capio that offers professional-strength document capture for desktop information management and extends the companyâs flagship Ascent Capture architecture to any knowledge worker in an organization. Designed for individual business users in a department of a larger organization or remote locations, Capio Version 1.5 provides a secure distributed capture solution that enables users to scan and index their work, then share documents with a central processing site or store them locally.
With Capio, users can quickly and easily scan, store, search and retrieve their documents, such as invoices, legal or medical records, receipts, or any other paper items that can clutter a workerâs desktop. Capio 1.5 adds a front-end distributed capture function that delivers documents into the Ascent platform at a central site from anywhere in the world via the Internet or a network connection. Capio 1.5 enables users to transition between ad hoc personal capture and business process-driven transactional capture whereby documents are scanned using desktop scanners or MFPs, then business rules are applied to direct where each one goes in a business workflow.

Using Kofaxâs proprietary VRS (VirtualReScan) technology to improve both image quality and OCR (optical character recognition) accuracy, Capio delivers unmatched image quality and eliminates the need to rescan document images because of its automatic check for and adjustment of alignment (skew), brightness, contrast and image clarity. This automatic feature delivers enhanced scans the first time they are entered into a userâs system, reducing the amount of time that knowledge workers spend on rescanning documents and improving their productivity.
In addition to Capioâs enterprise-oriented front-end distributed capture capabilities, the product also solves the paper-capture needs of small, home-based and personal businesses. Because these types of businesses may not have access to IT resources to install, train or support a document-capture product, Capio was designed for an easy, "out-of-the-box" installation. The search and retrieval of document images is handled through an intuitive interface to enable quick and easy access to captured information. Instead of wasting time digging through a file cabinet or stack of papers to find a document, business professionals can be more efficient by simply typing a few keywords into Capio to find a specific document.
