ARJUNA AND IONA ACHIEVE WEB SERVICES TRANSACTION INTEROPERABILITY

Successful Participation at WS-Transactions Interoperability Workshop An Important Step in Advancing Specifications

DUBLIN, Ireland & WALTHAM, Mass. & NEWCASTLE, England - February 8, 2005 -- IONA Technologies (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high-performance integration solutions for mission-critical IT environments, along with Arjuna, a leading supplier of standards-based transaction management software, today announced the recent successful demonstration of Web services transaction interoperability at a workshop hosted by IBM. In addition to demonstrating interoperability between their products, IONA, Arjuna and other participants used the workshop as a forum to ensure that the WS-AtomicTransaction, WS-Coordination and WS-BusinessActivity specifications are ready to be submitted to a standards body for review and ratification.

"To make Web services the de facto standard for supporting the integration requirements of mission-critical systems, the industry requires a widely adopted, functional transaction processing standard that can operate reliably across the diverse infrastructures of technology driven businesses," explained Eric Newcomer, CTO, IONA. "Artix, IONA's extensible Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is already highly regarded for its ability to turn enterprise diversity into an asset by bridging the multiple protocols, transports and security environments found in large, distributed systems.
These emerging Web services transaction specifications are important in that they will allow Artix to effectively and reliably bridge the various transaction environments deployed by our customers and prospects."

As an extensible ESB, Artix allows the core capabilities of an enterprise system to be expanded to address project-specific or platform-specific application characteristics. In an enterprise context, where multiple infrastructure platforms and multiple system architectures must be made to work together, such user control is essential. Only an extensible solution can address the level of complexity and heterogeneity that is common to today's enterprises.

Arjuna's latest product offering (Arjuna Transaction Service 4.0) uses a standards compliant coordination infrastructure to support business transactions that span multiple Web services, J2EE and CORBA components and ensures that the consistency of the overall business transaction is maintained even in the event of occasional component failures. With support for both short lived ACID transactions (WS-AtomicTransaction) and long running business processes (WS-BusinessActivity), ArjunaTS provides the ideal solution for business process coordination both inside the enterprise and along the supply chain.

"Arjuna has been actively involved in shaping transaction specifications for over 20 years and has worked closely with IBM, IONA and other industry leaders over that period," said David Ingham, CTO, Arjuna. "We're very happy to announce this successful interoperability demonstration between ArjunaTS 4.0 and products from IONA and the other vendors. This event demonstrates that Web services technology is ready for real business-critical deployments and reinforces our reputation as a Centre of Excellence for transactional technology."

As an increasing number of organizations look to deploy Web services projects in the enterprise, and use Web services to support mission-critical initiatives, it is important that the standards driving the industry are able to support these efforts. The demonstration of WS transactions interoperability highlights the fact that the Web services standards are evolving and maturing to provide the critical support required for real-world, heterogeneous enterprise computing.

The WS transactions specifications are designed to enable interoperability of distributed, recoverable transactions. They are also intended to support traditional, short-lived transactions, as well as the long-term and highly coordinated activities that drive a majority of enterprise business processes.
