STERLING COMMERCE POSITIONED IN THE LEADER QUADRANT IN APPLICATION INTEGRATION MAGIC QUADRANT IN SECOND QUARTER 2004

London, May 19, 2004 – Sterling Commerce, one of the world's largest providers of business integration solutions, announced today its inclusion in the leader quadrant in Gartner’s Application Integration 2Q04 Magic Quadrant(1). This analysis of the top vendors in the application integration and middleware market identified 23 active vendors in the space and compared their vision and ability to execute with customers.

Vendors in the leader quadrant have high revenue in this market, high market share and products that are of interest to a wide audience. According to Gartner Inc., leaders are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.

In considering organisations for inclusion in the Magic Quadrant, Gartner Inc. took into account a broad mix of application integration industry requirements. These requirements included business-to-business and internal application integration scenarios such as data consistency, multi-step processing and composite applications. To be included in the leader quadrant, vendors were evaluated on multiple requirements, such as corporate viability, including a strong management team and financial health, as well as their market presence and product’s efficacy.
