Barcelona, Spain, 30 June 2003 â StorageTek, the storage services and solutions expert, is demonstrating its Email Xcelerator software suite at this yearâs Microsoft Tech-Ed Europe. As a Microsoft partner and Windows solution provider, StorageTek will show how a strategic approach to email management can help customers effectively manage the wealth of business-critical information contained in email.
"IDC estimates that, on average, 60 per cent of business-critical information now resides on email," says Michael Väth, vice president and general manager, StorageTek EAME. "Email generates massive volumes of information that isnât always accessed frequently, but creates a data management crisis for many companies. Email Xcelerator applies Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) concepts to email records, managing and storing them based on their importance and age."
The Email Xcelerator software suite consists of the Email Archive Manager, the Email Content Manager and the Email Regulatory Manager. It is targeted at mid-to-large sized companies struggling to manage explosive email growth, and is designed to increase productivity and reduce the costs associated with the backup, retrieval and management of email systems.
StorageTek is achieving substantial cost and productivity savings from implementing Email Xcelerator in its own organisation. After factoring in average salaries and the time lost as users managed their email boxes, the company estimated it lost $2,013 per user per year in productivity. Multiply that by 3,270 employees at corporate headquarters alone, and the annual loss to the company was $6.5 million, or 350,000 hours. StorageTek now anticipates that Email Xcelerator will slash productivity losses by 90 per cent within a year. In addition to this, data storage costs will go down, as will maintenance and backup expenses, though the real business benefit is in end-user productivity.
The three StorageTek Email Xcelerator components are designed to address specific customer needs:
* The Email Archive Manager offloads attachments and copies email messages from Microsoft Exchange to a separate archive server, freeing up mail server space and improving performance.
* The Email Content Manager adds very powerful lifecycle management and content management capabilities to these functions.
* The Email Regulatory Manager is designed for customers in the financial arena and provides the supervisory function required by U.S. SEC and NASD regulations. To help regulated organisations comply with rules governing the review, classification and retention of email messages and attachments, the Email Regulatory Manager includes all the storage management and content management functions of the other two Email Xcelerator solutions.
These solutions can, in conjunction with StorageTekâs Application Storage Manager⢠software, migrate email messages to lower cost per MB tape libraries for long-term storage. Since messages and their attachments remain accessible at all times, there is no disruption to end-users.
