Extended Systems Provides Test Suite for "Point and Pay" Mobile Devices and Terminals

1 April 2003 - Extended Systems (Nasdaq: XTND), a leading provider of mobile
information management solutions for the enterprise, has released a
comprehensive set of test tools for mobile device manufacturers and
point-of-sale terminal vendors who want to implement the IrFM* (infrared
financial messaging) Point and Pay Profile.

The IrFM Point and Pay Profile-a recently released specification from the
Infrared Data Association (IrDA*-www.irda.org)-essentially enables users to
perform wireless financial transactions between an IrFM-enabled mobile
device, such as a mobile phone or pager, and an IrFM point-of-sale terminal
located, for example, on a drinks vending machine or pay phone.

The IrFM Point and Pay standard was developed by IrDA in conjunction with
its major stakeholders including Agilent, CrossCheck, Extended Systems,
Harex, Ingenico, In2M, Novalog, Nippon Telephone and Telegraph (NTT), NTT
DoCoMo, Palm Computing, SK Telecom, Toshiba TEC, Visa International and
ZiLOG, among others.

Extended Systems' XTNDAccess IrDA Test Suite helps device and terminal
manufacturers address IrFM interoperability issues and speed up time to
market by providing a way to ensure that products are compliant with IrDA's
IrFM test specification v1.0, as well as the OBEX (Object Exchange) test
specification v 1.01. The test suite, the first of its kind on the market,
features an intuitive graphical user interface and 138 completed test
scripts covering all requirements for both IrFM and OBEX. Customisation of
existing test scripts and the addition of new test scripts are easily

"The XTNDAccess IrDA Test Suite allows developers to easily test, debug and
submit their products for IrFM certification with complete confidence in the
results," said David Hofacker, business unit manager of Extended Systems'
Universal Mobile Connectivity Group. "By bringing the test suite to market
first, Extended Systems continues to lead the industry in providing
comprehensive tools to quickly develop robust IrDA solutions and ensure the
interoperability and reliability required for quick market adoption."

"Extended Systems' test suite is designed to incorporate all tests required
for IrFM and OBEX certification into an easy to use, flexible user
interface," said Ronald Brown, executive director of the Infrared Data
Association. "This comprehensive tool should significantly decrease
development time and will help to ensure IrFM interoperability."

Protocol Expertise
In 1997, Extended Systems authored the original Object Exchange (OBEX)
specification and oversaw its adoption by the Infrared Data Association and
Bluetooth Special Interest Group (1999). In 2002, Extended Systems authored
the IrFM test specification for the IrDA Association and released the first
embedded software development kit for Point of Sale (POS) terminals and
Personal Trusted Devices (PTD). Extended Systems' wireless protocol
expertise, leadership within IrDA, Bluetooth and SyncML standards bodies,
and its large base of OEMs (+200 IrDA, +100 Bluetooth) assures the highest
quality test tools.
