ManTech Advanced Recognition (MARL) Ltd. today announced that Serco Ryan, the leading supplier of managed stock systems, will be implementing ManTech's AUTO ID technology in all 20 of its operating locations throughout the UK. The company forms an integral part of the essential components supply chain for many industry sectors, including manufacturing, construction, automotive, and electronics. ManTech has designed a hand held and mobile phone combination that Serco Ryan staff use on customer visits to scan goods bins to determine the level of replenishment required. Ryan has run a paperless system, trebled the possible number of customer
visits per day, and has significantly improved customer service levels.
Serco Ryan's Financial Director, Seamus Murphy, says, "We piloted the system and were convinced of its value after just one week. Prior to using Auto ID, we were using very unwieldy barcode scanners that proved unpractical - so much so that some of our staff would have preferred to have reverted back to traditional methods. From here, the data gathered would need to be keyed into the information processing system, which was a drain on valuable human resource."
He continues, "ManTech was recommended to us by our parent company, The Wyko Group, and what started as a simple barcode structure has been developed by ManTech into a very sophisticated system using the latest mobile phone technology. Now, when the hand held device is aimed at the bin it takes an immediate reading, and the information is automatically sent to the central computer system, which instantly records the exact amount of replenishment required. Previously, Serco Ryan staff would drive to customer offices, deliver the goods, then record replenishment requirements for product supply and then return to the local branch."
ManTech's Group Marketing Director, James Silcock, continues, "The logical thought processes behind the development of technology are often gravitated out of control with the end result. In an important supply chain like Serco Ryan's, it was essential not to lose sight of the basic requirement. We could see Serco Ryan needed to minimise inventory at its customers' premises, taking the complication out of the replenishment process, and increase the number of customer visits. By combining two very simple technologies we were able to present the ideal solution."
