"...Coupled with the power of q, event processing can be done on streaming data enabling engineers to focus on maximizing performance.” - Daniel Hurst, Aero Technology Development Leader, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing

Mission Statement

First Derivatives is a global technology provider with over 20 years of experience working with some of the world’s largest finance, technology, automotive, manufacturing and energy institutions. The Group’s Kx technology, incorporating the kdb+ time-series database, is a leader in high-performance, in-memory computing, streaming analytics and operational intelligence. Kx delivers the best possible performance and flexibility for high-volume, data-
intensive analytics, and applications across multiple industries. FD’s distinct competitive advantage derives from its unique combination of knowledge of financial markets and expertise in financial services technologies.

This coupled with the company’s blend of core technology, pool of highly-trained consultants, developer tools and its investment in recruitment and world -class in-house training sets it apart from the competition in helping clients make real-time decisions on vast quantities of streaming and historical data. The Group operates from 14 offices across Europe, North America and Asia Pacific and employs more than 2,400 people worldwide.

Kx technology is built on a proprietary software platform called kdb+. It is a time-series database system that has been independently verified to be the fastest at complex real-world financial analytics by the Securities Trading Analysis Center, a highly regarded third-party organization. As a vector-based technology, Kx has the ability to query very large scale datasets quickly and efficiently. Often described by programmers as “elegant,” kdb+ incorporates the ability to analyze streaming, real-time and historical data in one system, unlike any other competing product.
Our suite of products and solutions incorporate thousands of man-years’ worth of knowledge by Kx engineers who have been building large-scale enterprise systems at global corporations for over 20 years. Leveraging this knowledge base, and the ability of kdb+ to provide a high-performance data engine and data warehouse, distinguishes all of our offerings. The company also offer uniquely affordable “Near Shore” and back-office services to global institutions around the world, which allows customers to have expert support for all Kx software once implemented.

Benefits

First Derivatives & Kx technology is ideally suited to the extreme data analytics challenges found in managing market data, this is evidenced with 20 of the leading tier one investment banks as clients. As a result of the explosion in operational data, the group has extended their offering to other industries including manufacturing, IoT and Utilities where Kx’s ability to handle millions of updates per second has established it as the leading technology to capture, store and analyze market data. Indeed, Kx appears to be changing the game in data-intensive industries where capturing, analyzing and acting on vast amounts of Big Data quickly creates a key competitive advantage.

First Derivatives recruits and trains their own domain and technical experts through their award-winning training programmes. The foundations are rooted in academic excellence, entrepreneurship, customer centricity, agility and teamwork.
Combined with a constant challenge to embrace responsibility and grow, supported by training and a career framework, FD delivers a highly skilled and motivated workforce that drives the growth and changes the game for the customers.

Focus

Across our business, as our customers increasingly pivot to the cloud, we are directing our efforts to ensure that Kx and our data expertise are in pole position to help them obtain the benefits of agility and flexibility by enabling easy access to the competitive advantages Kx provides. The recent launch of serverless kdb+ is an important initiative to accelerate this process.

Kx streaming analytics is a game changer, enabling new ways of working that deliver operational efficiency and generate new revenue streams for our clients. Examples include analysing streaming data from machines in precision manufacturing to improve yields and reduce waste; mining vast volumes of intent data to deliver sales leads that convert at higher rates than competing methods; and streaming analytics on F1 cars to increase safety and improve lap times.
