Acclaimed fintech entrepreneur Julia Streets hosted this year’s Fintech Innovation Awards where all the best companies in the sector were awarded in London, the city that has been defined as fintech capital of the world. Streets welcomed the newcomers at the event and highlighted that this was a sign of innovation as new fintechs were being showcased and commended for their work in the finance and technology industries.

Guest speaker RT Hons Matt Hancock MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General spoke about how “fintech is at the heart of the digital revolution.” He continued to explore how this is not just an important change for a company, fintech is reshaping society as “investment is in touch with ideas.” As a society, we became accustomed to using paper statements, but now we use an analytics package that can help people optimise their spending habits.

Hancock explored how the government should not predict what should happen, but should insist so that companies can grow and fulfill expectations. A new UK fintech strategy will be put in place as we see more open banking standards come to the surface. This will in turn, contribute to Britain and the global economy, as Hancock said.

Dan Cobley, Managing Partner of Fintech at Blenheim Chalcot, emphasised that we are in the epicentre of fintech and 2016 is set to be a great year for fintech. With accelerator Santander Innoventures partnering with Kabbage and Worldpay's partnership with Liberis at the end of last year, this growth and collaboration is set to grow.

The evening also featured a fascinating keynote presentation from Dan Ariely, bestselling author and Professor of Psychology and Behaviour at Duke University who spoke about the psychology of money and how fintech could alleviate the “pain of paying.” He put across a vision that spoke to the audience about how people undertake tasks in an irrational way and perhaps this way of managing money is what separates the rich and poor.
