The FIX Trading Community’s annual EMEA Conference is now in its 7th year. The event will be held on Tuesday 10th March at Old Billingsgate, London, a venue which has now become its spiritual home. Headlined as being Europe’s largest one day trading event, the conference is noted for its high quality speakers, both from the industry and externally, with politicians, sports stars, etc. speaking at the event.

The beauty of the event is its simplicity in a way. The event is organised by the FIX Trading Community and its members. The primary aim of all FIX events is to be educational, as opposed to commercial. The agenda is developed by the members and the speakers are suggested by the members. There is a strict no sales pitch policy for speakers on the day. In short, you have an event that is put together by the industry, for the industry.

For the first time this year, the EMEA Conference will have four distinct streams – two business, one technical and one educational. The two business streams will provide opportunities for people to hear about some of the initiatives that the different Working Groups and Committees have worked on and are continuing to work on. An excellent example of this is the EMEA Investment Management Working Group update in the afternoon. During 2014, some key initiatives came out of this group, such as the release of a Best Practices document for the automation of the Initial Public Offering (IPO) process and continued work on the Execution Venue Analysis. Hearing their thoughts and plans for 2015 will be extremely interesting for the audience.

This year as well, there will be slightly more focus on multi asset classes. As more and more financial instruments become electronically traded, so does the need for FIX to make sure it stays at the forefront of change. The Community is lucky enough to have some senior thought leaders within its ranks and there will be interesting debates at the conference regarding the changes in structure of markets brought on by regulation across the globe.

Of course, MiFID II, Dodd-Frank and Basel III will feature highly on any financial market’s conference agenda and these items will be discussed and, importantly, how FIX is addressing and will continue to address this significant increase in regulation. The conference will also welcome Edwin Schooling Latter, Head of Markets Infrastructure and Policy, the Financial Conduct Authority, to give a keynote presentation in the morning.

The FIX Trading Community has also started to look at the issue of cybersecurity. In January, there was a well-attended kick-off call for a new Cybersecurity Working Group to look at the issues and to see if the FIX Trading Community can help to address these threats. This will be discussed at the conference during a cybersecurity panel which will seek to explore the cybersecurity landscape as it pertains to financial markets, the general and specific outlook, anticipated regulatory and industry responses.

Over the years, the EMEA Conference has been lucky enough to attract some excellent keynote speakers. This year, Robert Guest, US Editor of The Economist, will give the keynote address in the morning. Robert’s views on the global economy and the trends that he is seeing will set the day up well with some thought-provoking ideas. In the afternoon, the keynote speaker is former England Rugby Union player, Brian Moore. Given that this will be in the middle of the Rugby Union Six Nations Championship and ahead of an eagerly awaited World Cup in the autumn, his session will be one to attend.

Anyone who has regularly attended this event will recognise that it is more than just another trade conference. Over 900 people attended last year’s event and expectations are for a similar number again this year. It is the opportunity to network with your clients, your peers, your counterparties and your competitors. The vibe is positive and collaborative. For more details, please see here.
