System Disaggregation Delivers Innovation in Next-generation SDN Transport Architectures
Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and communications solutions, today unveiled the Fujitsu 1FINITY™ platform consisting of Transport, Lambda, Switch, and Access blades. The 1FINITY platform is a revolutionary packet optical networking solution that incorporates a fully disaggregated architecture to provide significant benefits:
Virtualization, SDN, and NFV are driving significant changes across the telecom industry, causing network operators to rethink how element convergence is achieved. Functional blades of the 1FINITY platform are uniquely independent and not limited by integration with other technologies — or with shelf constraints such as backplane performance, space, thermal considerations, power, and inputs/outputs. These individual 1RU blades are crucial components of this first-ever completely disaggregated architecture, and they represent significant differentiators that allow network operators to truly drive change in their communications networks — increasing innovation velocity, reducing operating costs, and growing revenue streams.
“Both incumbent service providers and new hyperscale cloud computing service providers are interested in the flexibility, rapid development cycles, and open environments that disaggregated networking architectures provide,” said Andrew Schmitt, founder and lead analyst, Cignal Al. “Fujitsu is taking the lead in defining this segment of the optical transport market.”
Modular 1FINITY blades operate independently or, for broader network solutions, in combination with other optical platforms from Fujitsu and third parties. These are the 1FINITY blade families:
“Networks that enable innovative services and accelerate revenue generation are effective differentiators,” said Steve Pelosi, vice president, Fujitsu Network Communications. “In the 1FINITY platform, service providers have the building blocks they need to create game-changing networks that increase service velocity, grow revenue, and reduce operating costs.”
Fujitsu 1FINITY is designed to complement and extend Fujitsu FLASHWAVE® packet optical networking platforms. For example, network operators can insert a T200 blade to add beyond 100G services or an S100 to support switched Ethernet or OTN services. In FLASHWAVE 9500 ROADM networks, operators can create CD ROADM nodes using a combination of 1FINITY Lambda and Transport family blades to expand a metro ring or extend to a hub site. In addition, operators can extend the reach of 1FINITY and FLASHWAVE 9500 networks by providing multihaul ILA.
With dynamic hardware, white box design, open APIs, and standard protocols, the 1FINITY platform is optimized for SDN network management and control. Network configuration and provisioning are executed by open controllers using the NETCONF protocol. 1FINITY hardware can be paired with the Fujitsu Virtuora® software platform to provide users with element management, planning and design, and SDN control. The Virtuora NC network controller enables access to a robust application ecosystem for multilayer control of WDM, OTN, and packet networks. Together, the 1FINITY + Virtuora platforms comprise “the programmable, disaggregated network,” a formidable combination for future network automation and virtualization.
Fujitsu 1FINITY platform blades will be commercially available beginning in the second quarter of 2016.
