SIX's financial market infrastructure – whether on the stock exchange, in post-trading or the card business – is based on IT and in electronic processing. It needs specialist staff to operate, maintain and further develop these tools. SIX fosters career starters and is currently training around 28 young people as IT specialists. Last week, at least five of them were at the Swiss job fair "Swiss Skills" in Berne.
The event was noisy and crowded. A group of youngsters gathered at the SIX stand at the Swiss Skills job fair in Berne – drawn magnetically to the brightly blinking lights of an LED wall. The aim of the lights game is to switch off the blinking as quickly as possible. "It's a great way of attracting attention," said Cyrill Weiss, a systems technician in the third year of his apprenticeship at SIX and one of the five apprentices managing the stand that day. He and his young colleagues chatted to a number of the visitors.
What exactly does SIX do? What is involved in an apprenticeship as an application developer or systems technician? What's it like at SIX? Our young employees talked about what they do: they explained the functions of the mobile payment terminal on display at the stand and they distributed small SIX keyrings produced by a 3-D printer they had programmed themselves. And they are clearly proud to be able to introduce themselves and their employer.
"We apprentices know better than any brochure what training in the area of ICT is really like and can tell them about more than just the highlights," they said. "We're also more easygoing." This was appreciated by the young visitors. The crowds at the SIX stand didn't subside at all until lunchtime.
SIX hopes that it can soon count one or other of the job fair visitors among its new staff.
