Morningstar Australasia Announces Speakers, Agenda for Second Annual Individual Investor Conference

Morningstar Australasia Pty Limited, a subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. (NASDAQ: MORN), today announced the agenda for its second annual Investment Conference for Australian individual investors and self-managed superannuation trustees to be held on Friday 24 October 2014 at the Wesley Conference Centre, Sydney.

“We’ve prepared an agenda of practical, insightful sessions to help investors and self-managed superannuation fund trustees meet today’s biggest investing challenges,” Morningstar Australasia Co-Chief Executive Officer Heather Brilliant, CFA said. “Attendees will hear from leading investment experts about the major macroeconomic issues, investment opportunities outside Australia, investing in credit securities, and other investment ideas. We’ll share insights and concrete steps investors and SMSF trustees can take to make more informed and confident investment decisions to help achieve their financial goals.”

The conference will kick off at 9am with a welcome and introduction from Anthony Serhan, CFA, Morningstar Managing Director of Research Strategy Asia-Pacific.

Other sessions will follow:

• 9:10am – ‘The Big Picture in Perspective’ will feature Chris Galloway, Managing Director, Morningstar Investment Management Asia-Pacific. The constant stream of macroeconomic headlines can whipsaw markets and investors with each new piece of data. The session will give attendees a more informed perspective on markets and the global economy today, isolate the world’s trouble spots, set realistic expectations for economic growth, and help them understand the implications for investment strategy.
• 9:50am – ‘Putting Investors First – Balancing Growth and Shareholder Return’ will feature Andrew Penn, Chief Financial Officer, Telstra Limited (ASX: TLS), in conversation with Peter Warnes, Head of Equities Research, Morningstar Australasia. The leading player in the Australian telecommunications industry, Telstra remains a cornerstone of self-directed retirement and individual investor portfolios. 
Penn will discuss how the firm balances company growth with investors’ need for dividends.
• 10:35am – ‘Navigating the Hybrid Maze’: John Likos, CFA, Credit Analyst, Morningstar Australasia will pinpoint the key issues and risks associated with the wave of credit securities, and how investors can successfully select those that offer the best opportunities for income and long-term capital appreciation.
• 11:45am – ‘Navigate Today’s Market: Morningstar Strategist QandA’:Joel Bloomer, Morningstar Head of Equity and Credit Research Asia-Pacific, Mathew Hodge, Sector Head Basic Materials, Energy, and Utilities, Morningstar Australasia and Peter Warnes will answer attendee questions, suggest attractive investment opportunities in today’s market, and help investors and SMSF trustees best position themselves for long-term success.
• 12:25pm – ‘Get a Handle on Your SMSF’: SMSF trustees face new regulations, administrative penalties, and audit requirements. In this session, Graeme Colley, Director, Technical and Professional Standards, SMSF Professionals’ Association of Australia, will give trustees practical tips about ways to ensure that they comply with the latest changes.
• 2:00pm – ‘Where Are the Global Investment Opportunities?’: Hamish Douglass, Chief Investment Officer, Magellan Financial Group, will take attendees around the world of investment opportunities outside Australia. This session is an opportunity to receive insights from one of Australia’s most successful and high-profile international investment managers.
• 2:50pm – ‘There’s More to Portfolios Than Australian Equities’: This session, led by Tim Murphy, CFA, Director of Manager Research, Morningstar Australasia will challenge Australian investors’ widely held home bias, and equip attendees with a practical understanding of how other asset classes and investment approaches can achieve greater portfolio diversification and better investment results.
• 3:40pm – ‘Secrets From a Top Stockpicker’: Anton Tagliaferro, Founder and Investment Director, Investors Mutual Limited, a leading value investor and sharemarket veteran, will share insights into his stockpicking success in conversation with Grant Kennaway, Morningstar Director of Manager Research, Asia-Pacific.
• 4:20pm – ‘Ready Your Portfolio for Retirement: Bringing Key Strategies Together’: The shift from wealth accumulation to regular income in retirement demands attention and care to ensure the most effective asset allocation for portfolio drawdown, tax efficiency, and sustainability. In this session, moderated by Anthony Serhan, Chris GallowayPeter Warnes, and Tim Murphy will provide attendees with practical solutions to help manage the transition to retirement.
