Brits name online banking a major '21st century' tech development

The British public regards internet shopping and online banking as the key technological developments of the '21st century' even though they were invented at the end of the last century.

A study conducted by E.ON, which surveyed the opinions of more than 2,000 British consumers, found that access to mobile internet devices was the third biggest tech advancement of the 21st century, followed by digital TV recorders and streaming films and TV online. The assessment of online banking as an innovation of this century can perhaps be explained by its coming to full fruition only in the last decade or so.

An overwhelming 75% respondents to the E.ON survey of 2,000 UK conusmers said that they now make use of online banking services, even though 43% were nervous about it at the outset.

Jean Fiddes, from E.ON’s smart metering programme, which was obviously seeking to assess the use of tech in UK consumer homes, said: "Our research shows consumers are increasingly using technology to make their lives easier and save money on everyday costs."

Despite the increased usage of online banking and internet-based stores and payment methods, the survey discovered around 39 million people are too nervous to make use of new advances.

Over half like to wait until new tech has proved itself in the market, while 19%need to see friends or family take the plunge first.
