Dutch bank Rabobank has announced plans to collaborate with Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) to launch a new commercial mobile payment system.
The collaboration between the firms will enable customers to use contactless payment products in smartphones that support near-field communications (NFC).
Jeroen Verrijdt, director of payments and savings at Rabobank Nederland, said the bank has recognised the steep increase in the use of mobile devices for payments.
He added: "We already have more daily users of mobile banking than we have for internet banking. We plan to follow our customers in these developments and want to focus on smartphone developments as in mobile NFC payments."
Rabobank customers can now apply for the mobile payment cards online and will receive them directly to their smartphone conveniently and securely, thanks to a fully-integrated service infrastructure between Rabobank and G&D.
The partnership will see G&D supplying the bank with its Trusted Service Manager solutions, which enables the secure provision of payment card information to smartphones over-the-air.
