Trend Micro: Online banking malware rising

Trend Micro's third quarter Security Roundup Report has revealed a continued increase in online banking malware in Australia and New Zealand.

As well as the rise in malware, the report indicated that the number of phishing attacks on Apple's iOS is also rising, with the region the third highest in terms of hosting Apple targeted attacks.

Android users were also a target for cyber crime, with the number of malicious attacks reaching the one million mark in the third quarter of 2012.

Trend Micro identified more than 200,000 malware infections targeting online banking in the three months to the end of September, with Australia named as the fourth most targeted country for such infections.

The US topped the list, followed closely by Brazil and Japan.

Sanjay Mehta, managing director Trend Micro, Australia and New Zealand, said: “As consumers gravitate to the convenience of online banking, criminals are developing tools at an exceedingly rapid pace to exploit a general lack of awareness."
