For over 30-years, Bloomberg has been a technology innovator, and as co-founder Tom Secunda has said, “If you don’t constantly innovate, you’re going to be left in the dust.” This week, thanks in great part to his vision and leadership, Bloomberg has once again been recognized by Institutional Investor (II) as the top innovator in its annual top Tech 50 list. It is important to note that by retaining this ranking we have hit another Bloomberg First – as Bloomberg is the first company in the history of this ranking to be named the top innovator two years in a row.
As part of this top rating, II identified what they believe to be some of the more significant technological innovations and milestones over the past 12 months including: IB Dealing, Bloomberg BETA, Bloomberg’s swap execution facility (SEF) filing, the latest Bloomberg Anywhere iPad App release, Bloomberg’s App Portal and Bloomberg’s integration of Twitter feeds via TWTR<GO>. About this year’s top ranking, II writes: “Bloomberg’s Twitter integration was a home run, a masterstroke of timeliness… But this win also came about by design. Without its army of programmers and one of the financial world’s most extensive and aggressive commitments to research and development, Bloomberg wouldn’t have been prepared for the Twitter opening, nor would it be the pacesetter that it has shown itself to be since its start in 1982, when ‘you had to invent technology to survive,’ as Secunda, a Bloomberg co-founder, puts it.
Institutional Investor, a leading global financial publication, has been issuing the annual Tech 50 list since 2000. The ranking includes pioneers in the financial services industry who demonstrate continued technological achievement and innovation. The publication’s editors and staff, with nominations and input from industry participants and experts, determine the rankings in four key areas: career achievements and contributions, scope and complexity of responsibilities, influence and leadership inside and outside one’s organization, and pure technological innovation.
