Markit to Launch Global Sector PMI™ Series

Markit, a leading, global financial information services company, today announced that it is launching the Markit Global Sector Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI™) series, the first ever economic indices to give users a global view of business conditions within specific industry sectors.

Luke Thompson, managing director and head of Markit Economics, said: “Global Sectors is an exciting addition to our PMI series, extending the breadth and depth of critical business intelligence provided by Markit. For the first time, equity analysts and economists will be able to gain an insight into industry sector business conditions at a global level every month.”

The new data set will provide monthly indicators of business trends such as output, order books, input prices, inventories and employment, for eight major groups – basic materials, consumer goods, consumer services, financials, healthcare, industrials, technology and telecommunication services – and an additional 26 sectors and subsectors within those groups.

Equity analysts, economists, investors and corporate planners will be able to use the data to track sector trends over time, and compare and rank sectors by performance and against global benchmarks, thereby identifying key growth industries and the drivers within them.

The Global Sector PMI data are derived from surveys of over 20,000 companies operating in 28 countries, including every major economy in the world. They will be released on the fifth UK working day of each month at 09:30hrs UK time.

The PMI surveys have become key benchmark indicators of economic conditions in the world’s largest economies and emerging markets. They provide timely economic signals and are watched closely by global financial markets and central banks. The PMI family covers almost all private sector economic activity in many countries and the major world economies, including the manufacturing, services, construction and retail sectors. In 2012, Markit launched new PMIs for the US, Egypt, Indonesia, Mexico and Vietnam and continues to increase the breadth of coverage.

Markit Global Sector PMI data for May will be released on Tuesday June 11 2013 at 09:30hrs UK time.
