DOVETAIL AND INTEL PROVE THE POWER OF NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE, SCALABLE PAYMENTS COMPONENTS

Dovetail Systems and the Intel Corporation have collaborated in tests to demonstrate the power of their high-performance, scalable payments components...and, following the trial, Dovetail is delighted to announce that the results have proved exceptional for its UK Faster Payments Solution.

They demonstrate how well-designed, modern components can be deployed to deliver near linear scalability across industry-standard, commodity priced hardware, thanks to exceptional flexibility and high performance. Dovetail’s UK Faster Payments solution was chosen for the test because of its combination of performance requirements and high volume capacity. The new UK Faster Payments scheme, due to go live in November 2007, demands that high volumes of low value individual payments be processed in real-time, measured to the second. The trial focussed on processing individual payments through a Faster Payments flow typical for a member bank, using ISO20022 as the normalising format.

Results revealed that one dual core Intel ® Xeon ® processor powered machine could handle 265 transactions per second from end to end with full resilience and auditing enabled.

In addition, the test demonstrated near linear scaling, as additional machines were added. The experiment concluded with a five-machine cluster processing more than 1,300 transactions per second, or over 4.5 million per hour – ample capacity for even the largest member bank. No performance limitations were identified that would prevent scaling beyond the hardware available for this test.

Richard Little, Chairman of Dovetail Systems, commented:-
“This has been a vital and very encouraging exercise for us. In low value payments absolute performance is crucial, and being able to achieve it on a modern and economically viable platform will help banks deal effectively with reduced business margins in payment processing. We’re most grateful to Intel for their collaboration which has allowed both teams to demonstrate the viability of modern techniques in this otherwise very traditional area of banking.”

Nigel Woodward, Director, Financial Services at the Intel Corporation agreed:-

“We recognize Dovetail as an innovator in the payments solutions space. The results that the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo architecture achieved with Dovetail’s Java Payments Components excite us to the potential of matching industry standard commodity priced hardware with contemporary software - which can grow to meet the evolving requirements in today’s payments and settlement functions. UK Faster Payments and SEPA are bound to create new requirements and the Intel – Dovetail combination looks to be very interesting”

Industry initiatives, notably Faster Payments in the UK and SEPA across Europe, are forcing banks to re-engineer their legacy batch systems to support new payments schemes, new message standards and far more stringent Service Level Agreements.

At the same time, banks face growing margin pressure in payments and are focused on reducing operating costs as volumes rise. Using Dovetail’s Payments Components banks can progressively renovate their existing infrastructure to achieve greater flexibility and cost-effective performance.
