Actuate BIRT Launched

Actuate Announces Annual Subscription-Based Indemnification, Maintenance and Support to Promote Adoption of BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools)
Bracknell, Berkshire, UK –June 6th, 2005 – Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ: ACTU), the world leader in Enterprise Reporting Applications, today announced the general availability of Actuate BIRT. Actuate BIRT adds value to the Eclipse BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) project with features such as comprehensive live support, indemnification, professional services and maintenance. BIRT, which has been downloaded from the Eclipse web site over 9,000 times since the preview version was launched in March, is the only Eclipse project centered on Business Intelligence and reporting, and one of only 6 top-level Eclipse Projects.

IT managers and project owners may have concerns about deploying an application that leverages open source software within their corporations. Issues with open source software include: a lack of indemnification, which could increase legal risks, a lack of maintenance and support, so no entity is accountable to address and resolve product defects in a timely manner, and a lack of enforceable Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Actuate BIRT aims to reduce the risks of adopting open source technology by introducing value added services in parallel to Eclipse BIRT. Actuate BIRT provides the added benefits of an indemnified license along with maintenance and support, on an annual subscription basis. These services provide subscribers with accountability for issues and bugs, legal indemnification and experienced support, all grounded in Actuate’s over ten years of experience in supporting and deploying enterprise class BI and reporting applications.

"Actuate BIRT will aid the adoption of the Eclipse BIRT Open Source project by providing a commercial alternative for corporations that want to reap the benefits of the Open Source movement, but also require timely and reliable support and legal protection," said Pete Cittadini, CEO and president of Actuate Corporation. "We will back Actuate BIRT with our world-class support organisation, which has a decade long track record of ensuring customer success for mission critical applications."
