Lends its Experience and Expertise in Mission-critical Enterprise Integration to the Development of Emerging Networking Standards

January 12, 2004 -- IONA Technologies (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in high performance integration solutions for mission-critical IT environments, today announced its membership in the Parlay Group, a global, multi-vendor consortium formed to develop open, technology-independent application programming interfaces (APIs). These APIs will better enable companies involved in providing hardware, software and services to the telecommunications and networking market to develop applications and technology solutions that are interoperable across multiple network platforms. As a member of the Parlay Group, IONA will have an important role in the advancement of new standards that support stronger integration and interoperability between the multiple constituents in the networking industry -carriers and service providers, equipment manufacturers and ISVs.

"Telecommunications carriers and network service providers are consistently faced with integration and interoperability challenges. The need to introduce new services, merger and acquisition activities, and the desire to improve customer service all require that the devices and applications on the network can communicate seamlessly, independent of vendor or when they may have been first deployed," said Scott Devens, vice president of products, IONA. "IONA brings to the Parlay Group more than a decade's worth of experience in providing standards-based integration technology on which carriers and network providers built their businesses. As such, we are in a very strong position to offer valuable expertise in the evolution of the new standards that will ease interoperability across the telecommunications industry."

Through its industry-leading Orbix and Artix product families, IONA already offers the telecommunications industry proven means to ensure that their integrated systems remain flexible, reusable, open and cost-effective. Today, hundreds of telecommunications companies around the world rely on IONA's extensible integration products to connect and support network management, configuration, security, operations, performance, and fault management and administration systems.

"We welcome IONA as a member of the Parlay Group and look forward to the company's contributions as the Parlay standards evolve," said Paul Ritchie, Executive Director of the Parlay Group. "IONA's proven expertise and dedication to open, standards-based integration will be a tremendous benefit and promises to add significant value to what the Parlay Group wants to accomplish for the networking and telecommunication industry."
