LOUISVILLE, Colo. and Storage World Conference - June 30, 2004 - Two weeks ago, StorageTek changed the face of tape storage automation technology for enterprise information lifecycle management (ILM) solutions with the availability of the StorageTek StreamLine(TM) SL8500 modular library system. Today, StorageTek(TM) (Storage Technology Corporation, NYSE:STK), the proven provider of information lifecycle management, unveiled the StreamLineÔ SL500 modular library system. The SL500 leverages technology from the SL8500 to offer unmatched scalability, storage density and data center class reliability to the mid-market.

"Information lifecycle management is a fundamental approach to drive unnecessary cost from an IT environment," said Pat Martin, StorageTek chairman, president and CEO. "The StorageTek StreamLine family of Enterprise ILM solutions reset customers' expectations on the future of enterprise data storage. Today, we're bringing enterprise-class reliability, serviceability and availability to the midrange. The SL500 is the new standard against which all midrange tape automation technologies will be judged for years to come."

The StorageTek StreamLine SL500 modular library system provides the most scalable, rack mounted, tape automation solution in the market today. The SL500 is designed to handle growing data protection needs by providing tremendous flexibility through unmatched configurability.

"This is yet one more milestone for StorageTek and ILM customers at large," said Jon Benson, StorageTek vice president and general manager, Automated Tape Solutions Group. "The SL500 modular library is the first tape automation product that brings Enterprise ILM performance, scalability, reliability, and manageability to the mid-market. As was the case with the SL8500, we've spent months listening to our customers worldwide to develop a cost-effective, flexible library that balances current needs with future requirements. The SL500 is the result of that work."

The SL500 starts at 30 LTO cartridge slots and scales to over 500 LTO cartridge slots storing over 100TB of uncompressed data and can support up to 18 tape drives providing throughput rates of over 2TB/hour. The SL500 supports midrange tape drive formats including LTO Gen-2 and will support SDLT in future versions.

Building on the hallmark of the StreamLine family of products, the SL500 provides true mixed media support and interfaces to consolidate UNIX and Windows computing infrastructures. The SL500 also allows for modular upgrades of capacity and throughput. Customers upgrading their library systems have traditionally experienced disruptions because they have had to move to a completely different library. The SL500 can be seamlessly scaled for capacity, functionality, and availability within the same library system. This approach completely changes the basis of customer value creation in mid-market tape automation.

"StorageTek's SL500 is a truly innovative tape library," said Robert Amatruda, research manager at IDC. "The SL500 will provide customers great flexibility as their data storage needs grow."

The SL500 provides a space efficient library solution that establishes a new benchmark on cost effective tape automation. The SL500 uses a dense cartridge slot design that achieves the optimal use of a customer's available floor space and provides users the best of both worlds: large storage capacity (up to 220 Terabytes) and mechanical reliability of a monolithic library and the small, convenient form factor and modularity of a rack mount library.

StorageTek will host live demonstrations of the StreamLine library series at the 2004 Storage World Conference (SWC) in Long Beach, CA, June 28 - July 1, 2004, at booth #409.
