PayPoint Deploys Stratus Fault-Tolerant Servers to Run Core EFT Transaction Application

Stratus ftServer platform supports 100,000+ transactions per day on PayPoint's UK network and delivers maximum uptime and easier management for core Mosaic Postilion platform.

London, 21 October 2002 - PayPoint, the UK's leading branded network for collecting over-the-counter payments, has deployed three Stratus ftServer 5200 fault-tolerant systems to support its core EFT transaction platform, Postilion from Mosaic Software.

PayPoint's new Postilion EFT platform went online Monday 30th September on the Stratus ftServer platform, which replaced a Compaq server solution at PayPoint. At the same time, PayPoint upgraded from Microsoft Windows NT to Windows 2000 Active Directory, gaining greater hardware and software
resilience from the upgrades.

Barry Skillett, General Manager for PayPoint Operations commented: "Our business demands maximum system availability. With the volume of transactions we handle, we cannot afford any downtime, and Stratus is committed to delivering higher availability compared with server cluster solutions. We also
expect to gain easier application management, as we are dealing with a single-server environment compared with a server cluster."

PayPoint chose to deploy Stratus ftServer systems following an evaluation period in its user-acceptance testing facilities.

High system availability and easy system management are critical to PayPoint's business. There are over 9,000 PayPoint terminals and 1500 EPOS terminals located in newsagents, convenience stores, supermarkets, forecourts and off licences across the UK. These outlets enable consumers to make payments to over 200 of the UK's utility and customer services organisations. PayPoint processes three million transactions per week, amounting to over £1.4 billion worth of payments collected annually on behalf of companies that include BT,
British Gas, Vodafone, T-Mobile and London Electricity, Scottish Power, TV Licensing and NTL.

Stratus ftServer systems address the key causes of system and application downtime and data loss - single points of failure, hardware failover and recovery time, faulty device drivers, human error, component and software incompatibilities. Out of the box, ftServer systems run Windows 2000 Advanced Server applications unmodified, integrate quickly into the IT infrastructure, and require little IT staff support for ongoing operation, system management, or servicing.

Stratus is the only server maker to disclose actual recorded 'availability' levels for its products based on reported service incidents from the installed base. The ftServer Uptime Meter is updated daily and can be viewed on the Stratus website The data is based on operating experience of both the hardware and Windows operating system over the most recent six months.
