HONOLULU, October 1, 2002- Hawaii Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano announced that Kamakura Corporation has been named as the 2002 Governor's Exporter of the Year. Kamakura Corporation was among six companies and organizations honored in various categories at an awards ceremony at the Governor's residence Washington Place for outstanding achievements in exporting Hawaii's products and services.
Kamakura was also named High Technology Exporter of the Year in addition to the overall Exporter of the Year award. Kamakura Corporation is an international leader in risk management software and risk information. Success in exporting, combined with a solid commitment for expansion and growth in Hawaii, contributed to its selection as the overall winner.
"We want to recognize companies and individuals that significantly contribute to expanding Hawaii's exports of products or services to the rest of the world," said Governor Ben Cayetano. "These companies are outstanding business leaders and have helped to make Hawaii an active player in the global market place."
"The State of Hawaii has been a critical to Kamakura's successful international expansion since our move from Japan at the end of 1997," said Donald R. van Deventer, President and CEO of Kamakura Corporation. "The research and development subsidies and tax incentives offered by Act 221, combined with Hawaii's international work force and global orientation, are benefits that cannot be replicated in any other state in the United States. Major companies have been too slow to realize that by locating in Hawaii there are very substantial benefits in staff productivity, reduction of staff turnover, multi-lingual infrastructure, client training and support, air travel efficiency to Asia, and the creation of shareholder value," said van Deventer. "We had extremely high expectations for the benefits of a relocation to Hawaii, and the merits of being in Hawaii have far exceeded our wildest expectations. Receipt of this award from the Governor confirms that in a very concrete way."
"Our economy is driven by the new dollars brought into our state," said Governor Cayetano. "And exporting achieves that. It also provides new opportunities for island residents. Today, we are not only recognizing these top export firms for their achievements. We come here to affirm and thank them for what they do to improve the lives of many here in Hawaii."
