Banking disaster man honored by the Queen2 January 2008The man responsible for creating the biggest personal data loss in British history, which caused chaos in the banking world, has been named in the Queen's New Year Honors List.
Banks were flooded with worried calls after the personal data of 25 million Brits, including their bank details, was lost by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Now the head of HMRC's child benefit section, Richard Summersgill, has been named as a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen. Mr Summersgill is responsible for the section of HMRC that lost the personal details of every family claiming child benefits in the UK two months ago. Although he has not been blamed directly, Whitehall has been unsettled by the nomination while an internal inquiry is still ongoing, according to The Daily Telegraph. Not only this, but HMRC has been accused of poor performance overall. Meanwhile, among other financial figures to be given an honor, Lloyds TSB group finance director Helen Weir has been awarded a CBE, as well as former CIMA president Claire Ighodaro, for their services to the finance industry. |
